Pachmarhi: A Haven in the Satpura Hills
While the exact timeline is uncertain, archeological evidence suggests that tribal communities like the Gonds and Korkus inhabited the region for a long time. Captain James Forsyth, a British officer, is credited with rediscovering Pachmarhi in the mid-19th century. Impressed by its cool climate and scenic beauty, the British developed it as a popular hill station and sanatorium, a place for rest and recuperation, especially during the hot Indian summers. Pachmarhi even served as the summer capital for the Central Provinces during British rule.
After India's independence, Pachmarhi retained its status as a popular tourist destination. The Pachmarhi Cantonment Board, established in 1872, continues to manage a significant portion of the area.Contact
